NEWS FROM THE OORT CLOUD
ANDREW LIVINGSTON
Gold Bolus Recordings GBR039
PERFORMANCE AND ALBUM RELEASE Mon. Dec. 17, 2018 C'Mon Everybody Brooklyn, NY EVENT DETAILS AND TICKETS News from the Oort Cloud is the third genre-defying full length solo album from multi-instrumentalist Andrew Livingston. Where Livingston’s two previous releases on Gold Bolus Recordings (under the alias Piad Guyvessant) are notable for shifting style and feel continually within the same track, Oort Cloud explores themes of vast distances, ephemerality, and passing like a ghost from one world into another. Livingston is best known as the touring cellist alongside Mike Doughty for the last 15 years (under the nickname “Scrap”), but his chops go well beyond indie rock. Starting from the Dallas metal scene of the 90s and formal studies on the cello, double bass, and in composition, Livingston has recently created electronic film scores for Yuliya Tsukerman and Nick Grant, multimedia puppet theater as co-leader of the Unitards, and contemporary opera with thingNY. Livingston’s skills at creating stimulating, gorgeous atmospheres in these fields is apparent listening to Oort Cloud, which gets its title from the theorized but unobserved patch of icy bodies that lies beyond our solar system. While the textures vary from lush to noisy, acoustic to electronic, Oort Cloud is focused on things impossible to focus on - the immensity of space, the impermanence of connection, being caught between physical and mental states. Livingston paints with bleakness and joy in the same space, with a sound palette both refined and ridiculous. News from the Oort Cloud is a self-portrait via stargazing; finding oneself though seeking the infinite. |
